Meta continues its work in wearable technology. According to sources close to the company, Meta is developing a new smartwatch with an integrated camera. The device, equipped with AI-powered features, is scheduled to be unveiled at the Meta Connect event to be held on September 17-18.
Meta will be unveiling its smartwatches
Meta’s smartwatch project was first announced in 2021. However, it was shelved in 2022. Recent information from supply chain sources indicates that the project has been reactivated and is in the final stages of development. The new device is being produced by China-based company Huaqin.
The most striking feature of the developed watch is its integrated camera. This design brings to mind ideas that Apple has considered but not implemented in the past. While patents involving a camera have been filed for the Apple Watch, this feature has not yet been implemented in a commercial product.
Meta plans to enter this field directly and offer a different user experience. With AI support, the camera can perform functions such as visual detection and recognition. These functions are said to be similar to Visual Intelligence on the iPhone or Google Lens on Android devices.
The new smartwatch is designed to be compatible with Meta’s previously released AI-powered glasses. This integration will reportedly deeply connect the device to the Meta ecosystem on both hardware and software.
With this product, the company is increasing its investments in wearable devices. This approach, which began with smart glasses, is now moving into the smartwatch segment. No specific information has yet been released regarding the product’s technical specifications, battery capacity, display technology, or pricing. The launch is expected to take place at the Meta Connect event.
